Program FocusIn 1993, the U.S. Congress enacted Section 3162 of the Defense Authorization Act directing the Department of Energy (DOE) to initiate programs to evaluate the health of former DOE defense nuclear facility workers. This project implements a notification and health evaluation program (including medical screening) for former building and construction trades workers who may have been exposed to health hazards as a result of prior work at Hanford.
How This Program Works
The first step is simple, yet an important one for those eligible: Call our toll-free number (1-800-866-9663) or send us notification of your interest through our communication center (the "Messaging..." button).
Our staff will set up a confidential work history interview for you. The interview will help highlight any possible health hazards and exposures from your work at Hanford.
The information from your interview is then reviewed by specialists in occupational health. If the specialists decide that you need to be checked, you will be sent for a free medical screening. If you do not need medical screening, you will also be informed.
This first screening is a physical exam and special tests to detect possible health problems related to your exposures. DOE will pay all the costs of this first screening.
