Solvents

What are Solvents?

Solvents dissolve fats and greases and other organic materials. Solvents are used as cleaners and degreasers. Solvents also are used to thin or mix pigments, paints, glues, pesticides, and epoxy resins.

Solvents evaporate into the air where the vapors can be inhaled. Solvents can penetrate the skin and pass into the blood. Very small exposures to solvents over many months can harm health. So can one large exposure.

Solvents Exposure

In rare cases, exposure to a variety of solvents can cause liver disease, such as chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis.

Prolonged exposure or a single severe exposure to solvents can damage the brain and nervous system. This may cause problems with memory, coordination, speech, or mood. Ongoing solvent exposure may cause premature aging.

What We Look For

If your exposure history indicates, your liver and kidney functions will be tested. Elevated liver or kidney function combined with a history of significant exposure to solvents may mean damage to the liver or kidney.

If your examination results show problems with kidney or liver function or nervous system damage, you will be referred to your doctor or advised of the specialty consultation needed for any additional tests or treatment.

Confidentiality

All test results are confidential. You will receive a letter summarizing your examination and photocopies of your test results which you may share with your personal physician.
