Abstract:
The long-term objectives of this research will be to decrease the number of injuries to workers performing construction and maintenance by analyzing the situations in which injuries have occurred to workers performing these activities at Department of Energy (DOE) work sites. The data to be analyzed are contained in DOE’s Comprehensive Accident/Incident Reporting and Recordkeeping System (CAIRS) to which the investigators have been granted access. By developing a categorical list of maintenance operations similar to the categorical list of construction operations and proximal causes of injuries developed by the investigators used to study construction and occupation, the overall plan for subsequent proposals would be to investigate other situational/organizational variables at DOE worksites (and perhaps using other injury databases) to understand better contributing or more distal factors associated with the various proximal causes. The proposed study has the potential to reduce construction injury/illness incidents by identifying concomitant organizational, personal and physical patterns associated with reported events contained in CAIRS. In subsequent proposals CIRPC staff would work with owners of construction, contractors and unions in the implementation and evaluation of intervention strategies resulting from the analyses of the CAIRS and supporting databases. Professional papers would be prepared for presentations and publications.
