Struck-By Hazards

Struck-by incidents are the 2nd leading cause of death among construction workers, and the leading cause of nonfatal injuries in the construction industry. [1] The National Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-by Incidents is a voluntary event for employers to talk directly to employees about safety. Any workplace can hold a stand-down by taking a break to focus on “Struck-by Hazards” and reinforcing the importance of training and prevention. Learn more from this “What is the Struck-by Stand-Down” flyer, and this NIOSH Feature “Join the National Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-by Incidents”.

The National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-by Incidents is coming up during National Work Zone Awareness Week, April 15-19, 2024! Join our live webinar to participate:

2024 Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-by Incidents Webinar: Developing and Enforcing Internal Traffic Control Plans
The construction industry has high rate of struck-by incidents, many of which are caused by vehicles and heavy equipment both on and near the work site. For this year’s Stand-Down, CPWR and the NORA Construction Sector Council Struck-by Work Group is hosting a webinar focused on the importance of internal traffic control plans (ITCPs) and how planning ahead to coordinate the flow of construction vehicles, equipment, and workers operating in work zones can prevent crashes, injuries, and deaths.
Learn the main principles of ITCPs and how to implement them from our panel of experts, including a contractor that utilizes ITCPs on their projects, an OSHA Compliance Assistance Specialist with experience in supporting and enforcing ITCPs, an attorney who works with clients to find solutions in the face of fatality and other inspections, and a representative of the Laborers’ Health & Safety Fund of North America, which has been instrumental in the promotion of ITCPs within the industry. Following a short presentation, the panelists will spend time answering your ITCP-related questions, and we encourage you to submit a question or two during registration below.

A recent report from CPWR, Struck-by Hazards, Barriers, and Opportunities in the Construction Industry — 2022 Survey Results, explores causes of struck-by injuries; barriers to their prevention; and examines measures to protect workers and barriers to implementing them. Based on these research findings and research on the use of nudges to guide decision-making, CPWR developed a Planning Program to Prevent Struck-by Incidents, which is currently being pilot tested.

Learn more about this research and how to participate in the pilot study from this on-demand webinar or this short video with one of our researchers.
