April 28, 2017: Workers' Memorial Day

In America, we set aside the last Sunday in May as Memorial Day to honor the men and women who have died defending our country. On April 28, we join nations around the world in marking Workers' Memorial Day -- a day of remembrance for those who have died on the job.

Each year, more than 4,000 American workers die from work-related injuries and over 50,000 die from occupational disease. Our industry sees more than its share of deadly on-the-job injuries: 985 in 2015. The single biggest cause? Falls, responsible for 367 of those deaths.

These deaths are preventable. I hope you will resolve to take action by participating in the National Safety Stand-Down on May 8-12. Construction contractors, labor organizations, government agencies and others will be taking time out that week to review safety procedures, check equipment, hold toolbox talks, and organize other fall awareness and prevention activities.

Not sure how to begin? The Stop Construction Falls website has all the resources you need to hold a Stand-Down event, ranging from a Five-Day Plan with ideas for each day of the week to a
free Stand-Down App with fall-related videos and activities.

Today, we remember our dead. Tomorrow, let's honor their memory by acting to Stop Construction Falls.
