New Data Bulletin Examines Fatal Injuries | |
In 2022, 20% of America’s nearly 5,500 on-the-job fatalities were among construction workers. The July 2024 issue of CPWR’s Data Bulletin -- "Fatal Injury Trends in the Construction Industry, 2011-2022" -- examines fatal occupational injuries and at-work deaths in construction by major subsector, occupation, demographics, primary source, event/exposure, and cause of death. In addition, we identified the most frequently used words in fatal injury narratives to identify trends. From 2011 to 2022, the number of fatal injuries increased 39.8%, while the rate increased 3.3%. All data sources examined found falls were a leading cause of fatal injuries. For example, falls, slips, and trips accounted for 40% of fatal injuries examined and the words “fall” and “fell” were used 3,884 times in CPWR Fatality Map Narratives. The July CPWR webinar will explore the Data Bulletin's findings in detail -- register below.

New Material to Help Develop a Year-Round Fall Prevention Program
The 2024 National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls may be behind us, but with falls from heights being the number one cause of work-related fatalities in construction, it’s important to focus on fall safety all year long! CPWR has developed suggestions for keeping your fall prevention program engaging and making sure leadership and employees continue thinking about how to keep themselves and one another safe. Remember, all falls are preventable!

CPWR Webinar: Fatal Injury Trends in the Construction Industry
As you likely already know, construction is one of the most hazardous industries in the United States: in 2022, its workers accounted for 19.9% of all on-the-job fatal injuries but only 7.5% of employment. Hear more about work-related fatalities and how they impact different sectors and populations of workers from CPWR’s Data Center Director, Dr. Amber Trueblood, in this upcoming webinar. Dr. Trueblood will review information from and answer your questions about the just-published Data Bulletin on "Fatal Injury Trends in the Construction Industry from 2011-2022" and will also share the latest efforts from the Data Center to develop a new, interactive CPWR Construction Chart Book. The Construction Chart Book, currently available in its sixth edition, presents a comprehensive overview of data on all facets the U.S. construction industry, including economic and employment trends, injuries and illnesses, and other safety and health issues. The newest version of it will be easier to access and users will be able to interact with distinct data dashboards on various topics to better isolate the information they need.
