April & May Stand-Downs Focus on Top Jobsite Killers

Falls and struck-by incidents remain top traumatic injury causes of death among construction workers, yet both are preventable. While these two hazards should remain top of mind all year, CPWR-OSHA-NIOSH Stand-Down events this spring provide an opportunity to give them special attention.

This year’s National Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-by Incidents will once again take place during National Work Zone Awareness Week, April 20-24. Pause work on your jobsite(s) to conduct training, revisit your struck-by prevention planning process, or watch one of our recorded webinars. This year’s Struck-by Stand-Down webinar will take place on Monday, April 20th at 1:00 p.m. Eastern and will focus on the Use of Positive Protection Devices for Work Zone Safety.

The 13th annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction will take place May 4-8. With the support of our fellow organizers, Premier Partners, and many long-time Falls Campaign supporters, CPWR is adding new resources to StopConstructionFalls.com. Don’t forget to order your 2026 Stand-Down stickers and fall-related Hazard Alert Cards in English and Spanish, and stay tuned for information on Stand-Down-related webinars.

TOOLS FOR SAFETY AND HEALTH

Resources for Women in Construction

As CPWR’s interactive Data Dashboard shows, women are a small but important part of the industry’s workforce. The theme of this year’s Women in Construction Week (March 1-7), “Level Up. Build Strong,” highlights the continued growth, resilience, and excellence of women in the industry. CPWR has developed a range of materials related to women construction workers, including a guide to finding PPE that fits properly, a task list for various trades that can help pregnant workers, and our webinar series on how to support women in the industry.

Redesigned Silica Safe Launched

CPWR has just redesigned our Silica Safe website. Developed a dozen years ago to provide a one-stop source of information on how to prevent silica hazards and protect workers from exposure, the site has enabled the creation of tens of thousands of exposure control plans. To ensure it continues working well into the future, we have spent the last several months rebuilding it from the ground up, keeping all the same information and tools. To learn about the history and content of the site and how to use its “Create-A-Plan” tool to develop exposure control plans tailored to your jobsites, watch last week’s webinar.

RESEARCH NEWS

Contribute Your Knowledge to CPWR’s Heat Protection Project

To help capture the expertise of as many people in the field as possible, CPWR’s survey of what works to protect workers from heat illness is now available in Spanish. Share your knowledge through the survey, which takes about 10 minutes to complete. You can also support this research by hosting researchers at your site, which will build knowledge that leads to stronger protections for construction workers. Learn how to participate from this flyer -- English or Español.

CPWR’s Data Center Seeks Your Feedback

Our Data Center is conducting a brief survey to obtain feedback on its products, including how they meet the construction industry’s data needs and their overall usability. Your responses will help us determine what is or isn’t working and how we can improve to better meet the industry’s evolving data needs.

Share Your Experiences with Occupational Exposure to Forever Chemicals

A CPWR-supported research team at University of Massachusetts Lowell is examining the impact of hazardous chemical exposures—in particular, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as “forever chemicals”—on the health of painters and allied trades workers. As part of this study, the researchers are surveying workers on their activities, jobsite chemical exposures, and health conditions, and they are looking for volunteers to take their survey. Responding should take 20-30 minutes, and individual information will be kept confidential and will not be identified in any reports, presentations, and publications.

Use of Positive Protection Devices for Work Zone Safety

As part of the 2026 National Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-by Incidents in Construction, CPWR and ARTBA are hosting a webinar focused on the use of positive protection to keep workers safe in roadway construction work zones. The webinar will start with an overview of recent changes to the Federal Highway Administration’s Work Zone Safety and Mobility rule, which dictates when positive protection devices must be used or considered. Attendees will then hear from our panel on the practical application of this rule, plans for its implementation, and types of positive protection companies may want to consider using.
