Construction business owners are a diverse group. Timely and accurate data on owner demographics and characteristics can help us better understand and reach them to improve safety and health management.
This dashboard summarizes characteristics of construction business owners of both employer (payroll) and nonemployer firms (independent contractors and self-employed entities without employees and payroll). (Other information on business characteristics can be found on the Characteristics of Construction Businesses dashboard.)
Data used for the dashboard are publicly available from the U.S. Census Bureau, including 1) 2018 Annual Business Survey and 2) Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics. This dashboard includes 2017 data to match with the most recent Economic Census data available, so that trends can be examined between this dashboard and the Characteristics of Construction Businesses dashboard.
This story-dashboard summarizes characteristics of construction business owners in two categories: 1) Employer Firms and 2) Nonemployer Firms. Navigate between them by clicking on the blue caption boxes or arrows at the top of the dashboard.
Information on specific charts and instructions for dashboard use are included in the information icon located to the right of each dashboard title. To get a full view of the dashboard on a mobile device, zoom out slightly and use landscape mode, which will provide a better navigation experience.
You can download the data as a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is color-coded for each set of charts, and each worksheet’s name is based on the corresponding dashboard chart.
The dashboard will be updated when new Economic Census data are available. If you have questions, comments, or would like lower-level data not provided in the spreadsheet, please email [email protected].
