The construction industry has a large number of nonemployer (independent contractors and self-employed who have no employees or payroll) establishments, though employer (payroll) establishments play a major role in business revenue as well. (Related information on establishments can be found on the Characteristics of Construction Businesses Dashboard, Demographics of Construction Business Owners Dashboard, and the Construction Payroll Establishments and Employees Dashboard.)
This dashboard provides a more complete view of the industry by combining both employer and nonemployer establishments together by state, year, and detailed subsector.
Publicly available data come from the County Business Patterns (CBP) and Nonemployer Statistics (NES) Combined Reports.
Information on specific charts and instructions for dashboard use are included in the information icon located to the right of the dashboard title. To get a full view of the dashboard on a mobile device, zoom out slightly and use landscape mode, which will provide a better navigation experience.
You can download the data as a spreadsheet. Each worksheet’s name is based on the corresponding dashboard chart.
This dashboard will be updated in Fall 2023. If you have questions or comments, please email [email protected].
