Construction is a large, dynamic, and complex industry sector dominated by small establishments. This dashboard summarizes numbers of payroll establishments and employees in the construction industry from 2011 to 2019 by state, establishment size, and subsector.
Publicly available data come from the County Business Patterns (CBP), an annual U.S. Census Bureau series providing information by industry for establishments with paid employees. Self-employed or nonemployer establishments are excluded from the CBP data.
Three filters – State, Year, and Subsector (3-digit NAICS) – can be applied to all charts (including the map). Numbers (counts or percentages) shown on all charts except for the left bar chart by year are averages of the year(s) selected. A dynamic subtitle displaying Subsector filtered is included for each chart.
Dashboard instructions and information on filters, charts, and definitions are included in the information icon located to the right of the dashboard title.
To download all data included in the dashboard, click on the “Export to Excel” button in the top right corner. The data included in the Excel file will be based on the filters applied.
The dashboard will be updated annually when new data are available, with the next update scheduled for Fall 2022. If you have questions or comments, please email email@example.com
